At the end of April, 2009 Kursk became a place of Dell and AMD Corporate Solutions Workshop, organized by MERLION Projects, AMD, Dell, and Centaur Company (Kursk).
The workshop main purposes comprised a presentation of new server lines based on latest generation processors and presentation of up-to-date data storage systems solutions.
The interest of audience was especially awakened by the subject of virtualization technologies introduction into enterprises’ infrastructure.
The workshop was opened by its organizers’ representatives, Oleg Zhukov, Russia and CIS Corporate Segment Director, Gennady Simonov, MERLION Projects Corporate Customers Department Head, and Pavel Glotov, Centaur Company President.
Dell representatives spoke about Flexible Computing technology and Dell client products, new Dell server platforms as of an ideal environment for virtualization, as well as about virtual environments storage systems, and Dell service products.
AMD introduced some technological solutions for business efficiency.
The potential customers were granted a unique chance to see the leading chassis Dell PowerEdge M1000e with 4 blade servers PowerEdge M600 and 2 full-height blade servers PowerEdge M805 with two newest quad-core business class processors AMD OpteronTM in use. In the course of presentation the audience could see a data storage network based on Dell EqualLogic PS5000X corporate class storage system and Dell PowerVault MD3000i storage array. The participants’ interest was attracted by the latest Dell notebook models among which there were a powerful Latitude E6400, the first tablet PC in the branch Dell Latitude XT2 with Multi-Touch screen, a light PC for mobile people Latitude E4300, a powerful mobile PC for calculations Precision M6400, and a compact and economical desktop OptiPlex FX160 for everyday tasks solution.

The audience’s interest was especially attracted by the presentation “Administration and Management in Virtual Environment” prepared by MERLION Projects Technical Department. It showed how virtualization of computing resources can decrease expenses for IT infrastructure maintenance and allows to react promptly to the business applications’ requirements change by providing resources to the new applications instantly. A great interest was also paid to servers consolidation as the main condition for efficient operation of server applications and facilitation of physical servers resources use. Vyacheslav Karulin, Leading Specialist in server and storage systems, gave some specific examples of such solutions for small, medium and large companies. In each case he gave an evaluation of the economic efficiency and the required performance, scalability, and fault tolerance levels.
According to the workshop participants’ view, the most enthralling part was the virtual structure use presentation made by Valery Vasiliev, MERLION Projects Consultant Engineer, at an operating stand specially developed for the workshop. Two blade servers PowerEdge M600 with VMware ESX Server software were used as physical servers. Network storage operation was showed by means of PowerVault MD3000i storage system connected to the net by iSCSI. The solution was based on VMware cluster use. The virtual servers and the whole platform were controlled by VMware VirtualCenter. It demonstrated the operation of virtual infrastructure principal components, such as VMware HighAvailability, VMware VMotion, VMware DRS providing opportunities for high availability of all applications, migration of virtual machines between physical servers without guest OS shutdown, dynamic balancing of virtual servers load.
