AnalyticsHub in partnership with Alation implements a data catalog in one of the largest Russian banks

AnalyticsHub, a member of the MERLION Group, has successfully completed the 1st stage of the project to create a data catalog for Alfa-Bank. A catalog created on the Alation platform will allow the customer to speed up the search for the necessary data, reduce the time for processing it and extract the business value from the data more efficiently.

In 2021, the Bank's Data Office launched a project to create a corporate data catalog based on Alation, one of the world's leading platforms in the Metadata Management segment according to Gartner and Forrester. The Russian company AnalyticsHub, which has the largest number of certified Alation Certified Professionals in Russia, was chosen as the contractor for the implementation project.

The prerequisites for the creation of the data catalog were issues with the search and unambiguous understanding of data by various departments of the customer, which in turn led to a lack of understanding of the information landscape as a whole, high labor costs for data verification and expertise of  one “person”. The project involves the phased implementation of the data catalog: at the first stage - in the technical circuit, where data management specialists mainly work, and at the subsequent ones - covering the critical business units of the customer, where subject matter experts, business analysts and managers work with data.

“Our key task was to implement and provide a platform on the basis of which we will enable employees to understand the entire information landscape of the bank. After installing Alation, we started filling the data catalog from the contour of corporate data warehouses, which contain 70% of the bank's data granularity. After the system was put into commercial operation, positive feedback was received from users about the convenient functionality for searching, defining and updating data, visual visualization of metadata. We believe that in the subsequent stages, the introduction of such an integrated set of tools in business units will significantly speed up the search for the necessary data, reduce the time for business analysts to develop or adjust reports, and managers to make decisions based on reliable and high-quality information”.
