Computer board: prices for PCs and laptops will rise by 10-20%

Prices for computer equipment will grow by 10–20% in autumn due to increased demand and depreciation of the ruble. Distributors of electronics and analysts, interviewed by Izvestia, told us about this. There is already a shortage of specific laptop models and PC components. In September, new consignments of equipment will arrive at higher prices. According to experts, all electronics will rise in price, even those that are produced in Russia.

The game was not enough

In the first half of 2020, the demand for computers (PCs and laptops) was growing, and prices for them also increased, Izvestia was told by the Price.ru marketplace. The company analyzed the array of data on its site and user queries in search engines.

It turned out that the most popular monoblocks rose in price by 28% over the same period last year. PCs rose in price less significantly - by 7%, while laptops' prices remained at about the same level. At the same time, interest in computer technology in Runet has grown by 70%, explained the CEO of the marketplace Elena Sukhovey.

In the first half of the year, 1.5 million laptops were sold in Russia for 61.8 billion rubles, which is 38% more in unit terms and 46% more in monetary terms than in the same period of 2019, Izvestia was told by the press service "Messenger". The average price for a laptop, according to the company, increased by 6% and reached almost 41 thousand rubles.

According to M.Video-Eldorado, in the first six months of 2020, 370 thousand PCs were sold in the country for the amount of 10 billion rubles. This is 7% more in piece terms and 5% less in monetary terms than last year. The fact is that buyers more often chose models from the basic price segment, costing up to 25 thousand rubles, the company explained.

Since May of this year, laptops have risen in price by about 20%, said Tatyana Skokova, Director of the Wide-Profile Distribution Division of Merlion. The average price of stationary PCs rose by 10% due to the weakened ruble in March, she added.

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way people think about laptops. Many were transferred to remote work or distance learning, which sharply increased the demand for computer equipment, people were faced with the need to update it, purchase a second or even a third device. Enterprises needed to provide their employees with laptops to keep their workflow safe, said Alexander Kataev, CEO of Lenovo in Russia. According to him, the Russian laptop market has been showing constant growth over the past five months.

It is not waiting on the shelf

According to the leading analyst of Mobile Research Group Eldar Murtazin, there is now a shortage in the market of components for PCs and the most popular laptop models - the middle price segment, optimal in terms of price-quality ratio. Prices for them may rise by 15-20% in autumn, he added.

The increased demand for computer equipment will remain at least until January-February 2021, Tatiana Skokova believes. In the foreseeable future, the situation with the supply of laptops will not be normalized - the demand will remain high, and there will be a certain shortage of demanded configurations.

Homeschooling revealed weaknesses in the technical support of households - in many families, there is often no computer that would allow them to work and study without problems, explained the independent expert of the electronics market Arkady Markaryan.

Therefore, according to him, the demand for laptops and monoblocks is growing rapidly. And distributors of components for assembling personal computers report a shortage of goods from suppliers, which could raise the cost of computer components by 20% in autumn.

Sales growth will also continue this fall, especially if the predictions about the second wave of the spread of coronavirus infection come true: people will prepare for a new round of remote work and study, said Denis Kuskov, CEO of Telecom Daily. At the same time, according to him, the prices for laptops may rise by 10% in September due to changes in the ruble exchange rate.

But PC components may rise in price even more (by 20%) due to a supply interruption, the expert said. Denis Kuskov explained that the demand for them has grown, and those in stock at the warehouses are not enough. This is a niche product, so retailers do not purchase large quantities <...>
