Top players of the Russian IT market have voted on the side of civilized competition and are taking real steps to regulate the industry „from within”.
Largest Russian full-range distributor MERLION (www.merlion.com) became one of the first companies to sign the Business Ethics Charter for Distribution and Imports of IT Hardware. The document was officially presented to the business community at the IT summit in Yerevan on the 3rd of April. The summit was organized by the Association of Information and Computer Technology Companies (AICTC). Signatories to the Charter assert their firm commitment to use nothing but entirely legal channels of importing products to Russia and readiness to pay all due taxes.
The largest member companies of AICTC, including leading Russian distributors, were prime movers behind the Charter, Companies like MERLION that have been building up their business models for decades are interested in a stable market situation, transparency and civilized competition. By signing the Charter, IT companies demonstrate their resolve to resist black sheep attempts to evade taxes or customs regulations for the sake of profits or a larger market share.
The Charter is already beginning to have a positive effect on the Russian IT market. 23 well-known companies have signed it so far, improving their own standing in the community and adding to the significance of this declaration of open and fair dealing.
The appearance of the Charter itself is a real indication that the Russian IT market has entered a phase of conscious self-regulation, outstriding government oversight in adherence to common ethical and legal standards and norms of commerce.
With its endorsement of the Charter MERLION’s management expresses its firm belief than the largest players on the domestic IT market can become and are becoming the industry’s core, maintaning standards and ensuring complete transparency of business – compliant with state regulation but enforced by members of the community themselves.
